Abelmoschus moschatus

Stomach disorders,hysteria and as an aphrodisiac (seed); venereal diseases and sexual disorders (in men).The roots, seeds, and sometimes leaves, are used in traditional Indian medicines for a variety of illnesses including intestinal complaints, constipation, dyspepsia, and gonorrhea (Oudhia, 2001a).Roots and leaves are cures for gonorrhea (Agharkar 1991). Even use against venomous reptiles has been reported (Lindley 1985). The poultice of leaves and roots are used for boils, cystitis, fever, headache, rheumatism and vericose vein.

Abies alba

Used as an inhalant, to treat bronchitis, cystitis, leucorrhoea, ulcers and flatulent colic (leaves and resin); in bath extracts, rubbing oils etc for treating rheumatic pains and neuralgia (resin)

Abies canadensis

In leucorrhoea, prolapsus uteri, prolapsus ani, diarrhoea, gangrene, and in aphthous and other oral ulcerations (bark); pleurisy orchitis from mumps, peritonitis, and all inflammations caused by cold, to all sprains and bruises and to lumbago, rheumatism and sciatica, in herpes, moist eczema, fevers and psoriasis (oil)

Abies concolor

For cuts, wounds, in the treatment of TB (bark); for relieving rheumatism (foliage)

Abies grandis

As a wash for sore and infected eyes and as a gargle for sore throats (gum from bark); in the treatment of stomach problems and TB (root bark or stem); to ease rheumatism or to the chest to treat lung haemorrhages (poultice); in the treatment of colds (leaves)

Abies mariana

A folk remedy for kidney stones, stomach problems and rheumatism (inner bark); in the treatment of stomach pains, trembling and fits (root and bark); on purulent wounds, bad burns, skin rashes, scabies and persistent scabs (resin mixed with oil); in treating respiratory infections and kidney problems (gum or leaves); as a bath or a rub in treating dry skin or sores (leaves)

Abroma augusta

As a uterine tonic, in neuralgia, dysmenorrhoea and regulates menstrual flow (juice of root bark); diabetes, rheumatic pain and sinusitis (leaf).

Acacia catechu

Leprosy (root decoction. leaf. bark and fruit); in skin diseases and ulcers, chronic diarrhea, bleeding of the uterus and nose, mucosal discharges (such as leucorrhea) and hoarseness, gonorrhea (flowers), rheumatism and tooth ache (root), asthma, bronchitis, chest pain, sore in mouth (plant).

Acalypha indica

For cough (leaf extract); bronchitis and pneumonia (plant decoction); skin diseases (leaf); as a vermifuge, in constipation and rheumatism; in asthma, cough, bronchitis and earache (fruit) .

Aconitum bisma

In diarrhea, rheumatism, vomiting and as a tonic (root); gastrointestinal disorder (used in "Gasex") (plant).

Aconitum carmichaelii

In the treatment of shock and collapse, chronic diseases with symptoms of cold, gastralgia and rheumatic arthralgia, oedema and diarrhoea due to hypofunction of the spleen and kidney (root).

Aconitum chasmanthum

Rheumatism, diarrhea and neuralgia

Aconitum ferox

Rheumatism, neuralgia, leprosy, fever and chest discomfort. In India in the treatment of leprosy, fevers, cholera and rheumatism (Chopra et al., 1986)

Actaea alba

In the treatment of coughs, colds, rheumatism and syphilis, to treat itchy skin and as a gargle for sore throats (root)

Actaea cimicifuga

Lowers fevers and reduces pain (plant); in the treatment of rheumatic complaints, coughs, colds, headaches, gum inflammation and feverish infections such as measles (root)

Actaea spicata

Used in snakebite; antispasmodic, cytostatic, emetic, nervine and purgative (root);it is also considered useful in the treatment of nervous disorders and rheumatic fever (Coventry,1923).In India it is used in the treatment of rheumatism, goitre and asthma.

Actinidia chinensis

In the treatment of stones in the urinary tract, rheumatoid arthralgia, cancers of the liver and oesophagus (fruits, stems and roots)

Adenanthera pavonia

Curing eye diseases (wood paste) and in rheumatism, gout, haematuria and haematemesis (leaf decoction).

Adenostoma fasciculatum

In the treatment of rheumatism and as a wash for infected, sore or swollen parts of the body (leaves and branches)

Adhatoda vasica

For asthma and intermittent fever; used also as an expectorant in cases of chronic bronchitis and phthisis. On rheumatic joints, as a counter-irritant on inflammatory swellings, on fresh wounds, urticaria and in neuralgia.

Aegopodium podagraria

In the treatment of rheumatism, arthritis, gout, sciatica and disorders of the bladder and intestines, as a poultice on burns, stings, wounds, painful joints etc (infusion)

Aerva pseudotomentosa

Used in gastric complaints and rheumatism ; as antihelmintic

Aesculus glabra

For asthma, with continual dyspnoea, non-paroxysmal, tightness in the chest and about the heart, bronchial irritation with constriction, sense of constriction, tightness or uneasiness in the rectum, accompanied or not with hemorrhoids, intestinal irritation with constriction and colicky pains near the umbilicus, rheumatism and piles

Aesculus hippocastanum

Reduces fluid retention by increasing the permeability of the capillaries and allowing the re-absorption of excess fluid back into the circulatory system, for the treatment of a wide range of venous diseases, including hardening of the arteries, varicose veins, phlebitis, leg ulcers, haemorrhoids and frostbite (plant); in the treatment of malaria and dysentery, externally in the treatment of lupus and skin ulcers (tea from bark); fevers and whooping cough (leaves); in the treatment of rheumatism, neuralgia and haemorrhoids (seeds)

Aesculus indica

In edema (plant extract); leucorrhea (root); whooping cough (leaf) and vascular disorders (such as hemorrhoids , varicose veins and phlebitis); astringent, acrid and narcotic (seeds); for skin disease and rheumatism (oil from seed); the seed is given to horses suffering from colic; an anthelmintic on horses.

Ageratum conyzoides

Stops bleeding from cuts (leaf juice); as an antilithic (root), styptic (leaves),to treat cuts, wounds and bruises (plant juice); to treat scabies, rheumatism, coughs and colds (flower heads).

Ajuga bracteosa

Purifying blood and for fever (leaf juice); burns and boils (leaf powder); fever, skin diseases and joint pain (root bark); gout and rheumatism, palsy and amenorrhoea (plant).

Ajuga chamaepitys

For gout and rheumatism and efficient in menstrual derangements, in dropsy, jaundice, strangury, and visceral obstructions

Alangium chinense

In the treatment of rheumatism, numbness, traumatic injuries, wounds and snakebites; applied to the area around dislocated bones to help them setting (root paste)

Alcea rosea

Healing mucous membranes in upper respiratory tract disorders; fever, dysentry and gravel (roots); in rheumatism (flowers).

Aletris farinosa

Promotes the appetite and is used in the treatment of diarrhoea, rheumatism and jaundice, for expelling flatulence, for troubles arising from menopause and for various uterine disorders (root); It is used as a female tonic in loss of virility and for debility (decoction of the dried root); in stomach problems and bloody dysentery (infusion of the leaves).

Alhagi pseudalhagi

Rheumatism (oil); for swellings and abscesses (root decoction); for fever (leaves); as a blood coagulant (flowers); for chest pain and headache (leaf infusion)

Alnus rubra

In the treatment of many complaints such as headaches, rheumatic pains, internal injuries, diarrhoea, to eczema, sores and aches (bark); for diarrhoea (catkins and young cones)

Alpinia galanga

Used in fevers, catarrhal affections, rheumatism, incontinence of urine, bronchitis and as a carminative (rhizome).

Alstonia constricta

For chronic diarrhoea, dysentery and in intermittent fever; in curing certain forms of rheumatism (inner bark)

Alstonia scholaris

In tuberculosis and as a tonic and laxative (bark decoction); in skin disorders, in dysentery, chronic diarrhea and fever, in heart diseases, asthma and to stop bleeding of wounds; for deafness (bark); in leprosy and dyspepsia (fresh bark juice); for beri-beri and liver congestion (decoction of young leaf); to ulcers, sores, tumours and in rheumatic pain, and is used for curing toothache, an antidote for Antiaris- poisoning (the milky juice or latex).

Amorphophallus campanulatus

Asthma, dysentery and hemorrhoids (corm decoction); to treat acute rheumatism.

Anemone obtusiloba

In jaundice, spleen and kidney problems (leaf); in the treatment of rheumatism (oil)

Angelica archangelica

Good remedy for colds, coughs, pleurisy, wind, colic, rheumatism and diseases of the urinary organs, for intestinal problems (including indigestion).

Angelica atropurpurea

In the treatment of colds, rheumatism etc (leaves); in the treatment of fevers, colds, flatulent colic and other stomach disorders, obstructed menses and as a general tonic for women, as a gargle for sore throats and mouths and as a poultice for broken bones, swellings etc (infusion)

Angelica pubescens

To promote menstruation, to treat arthritis, rheumatism, headache, toothache and abscesses.

Annona muricata

For haematuria and urethritis (ripe fruit juice); to alleviate eczema and other skin afflictions and rheumatism (leaves); as an antidote for poisoning (bark); for all types of cancer, high blood pressure.

Annona squamosa

Head lice removal (seed); for cancerous tumors (bruised leaves and salt combination), administered in acute dysentery and as a snuff to overcome hysteria (bruised leaves). Leaves made into a paste without adding water are applied to unhealthy ulcers and wounds. The leaf decoction is also employed in baths to alleviate rheumatic pain.

Anthemis cotula

To induce menstruation and was traditionally used to treat supposedly hysterical conditions related to the uterus, as a poultice on piles or to draw splinters out of the body, and can also be applied to the bath water (herb); rheumatism, epilepsy, asthma, colds and fevers (infusion); onto insect stings (leaves)

Apium graveolens

To treat diarrhoea, dysentery, hoarseness of voice, gravels, indigestion and loss of appetite, and impurity of breast-milk caused, bronchitis (seed decoction); rheumatism (fruit); as a very potent aphrodisiac (seed); arthritis, bruises, dropsy, dysmenorrhea, gout, hoarseness, indigestion, depression, nervous affections resulting from the degeneration of sheathing, scurvy and sores.

Apocynum cannabinum

To treat syphilis, rheumatism, intestinal worms, fever, asthma, and dysentery (plant).

Aquilaria agallocha

In rheumatism, gout, diarrhea and ending vomiting (bark); in diarrhoea, dysentery, gout, rheumatism, asthma and paralysis.

Aralia nudicaulis

In the treatment of pulmonary diseases, cough, asthma, rheumatism, stomach aches and cystitis (root); used as a poultice in treating rheumatism, sores, burns, itchy skin, ulcers and skin problems such as eczema (root paste)

Aralia racemosa

In the treatment of pulmonary diseases, asthma, rheumatism etc (herb); to sores, burns, itchy skin, ulcers, swellings etc (root/fruit).Externally it is used as a poultice in treating rheumatism and skin problems such as eczema.

Arctium lappa

Liver and gallbladder problems, gastritis, ulcers, the initial onset of diabetes, alopecia, skin diseases (especially eczema), ulcers, in rheumatism, scrofulous gout, cancer, syphilis and in baldness. The herb is employed as an ointment or liniment for burns, ulcers and other cutaneous diseases.

Arctostaphylos uva-ursi

For urinary tract complaints, including cystitis and urolithiasis, to treat rashes, skin sores etc, and as a wash for a baby's head, as an eyewash, a mouthwash for cankers and sore gums and as a poultice for back pains, rheumatism, burns etc. (leaves)

Argyreia speciosa

Chronic ulcers and as an aphrodisiac (root powder); skin diseases (latex); as a tonic, in gonorrhea and disorders of the nervous system (root); rheumatism (root and latex); for male sexual disorders (plant).

Aristolochia longa

Relief of rheumatism, gout stimulation of glands and blood circulation

Arnica montana

An external treatment for bruises and sprains (Castro, 1990 and Bown, 1995); in the treatment of heart complaints and as a booster for the immune system. Arnica is used topically for a wide range of conditions including bruises, sprains, muscle aches, wound healing, acne, superficial phlebitis, rheumatic pain, inflammation from insect bites, and swelling due to fractures.

Artemisia campestris

To treat stomach problems (leaves); to rheumatic joints, eczema, bruises and sores (plant); as a hair tonic and to treat scalp infections (root)

Artemisia tridentata

In the treatment of digestive disorders and sore throats, to treat pneumonia, bad colds with coughing and bronchitis, for rheumatism, to relieve pain during child birthing (leaves); as a liniment on cuts, sores etc (crushed plant)

Atractylodes japonica

To help lower blood sugar levels and to exert a protective influence on the liver, gastro-intestinal disorders, diarrhoea, water retention, mastitis, fistula, rheumatoid arthritis and night blindness (rhizome)

Azadirachta indica

To treat skin diseases, rheumatism, stomach worms, gastric ulcers, urinary discharges, tumours, piles, toothache, arthritis, leprosy and sprains; used in Ayurveda practice to relieve cough, asthma, piles, tumours and urinary discharges.

Balanites aegyptiaca

In rheumatism (seed oil); stomach problems and as an expectorant (seed); useful in burns, wounds and ulcers, common cold, whooping cough, leucoderma, malaria, sleeping sickness and other skin diseases.

Baliospermum montanum

Rheumatism (seed oil); snakebite antidote (seed); to treat piles, anaemia, jaundice, skin diseases, cyst, as purgative, wound, conjunctivitis, diabetes, numbness, dropsy, general anasarca, asthma.

Balsamorhiza sagittata

For stomach pains, colds, whooping cough, TB, fevers and headaches (leaves, root and stem); to treat sore mouths and throats, toothaches, for body aches such as rheumatism, on wounds, blisters, bites, swellings and sores (root); for dysentery (seeds)

Barleria prionitis

As an expectorant (bark juice) and in catarrh (of children) (plant juice); in whooping cough and bronchitis (plant decoction); for wounds (leaf). as a poultice to promote healing of wounds and to relieve rheumatic pains, scabies and itches (crushed leaves); as a gargle to relieve toothache (leaf decoction).

Bellis perennis

In the treatment of catarrh, rheumatism, arthritis, liver and kidney disorders, as a blood purifier etc (herb); to wounds, bruises, for mouth ulcers (leaves); for the treatment of scorbutic complaints and eczema (root)

Betula pendula

Rheumatism, sciatica and long-term inflammations of the urinary tract. Used in treating intermittent fevers (inner bark); in the treatment of gout, dropsy and rheumatism, and is recommended as a reliable solvent of kidney stones (leaf infusion); for bathing skin eruptions (leaves and bark decoction)

Betula pubescens

In the treatment of various skin afflictions, especially eczema and psoriasis (inner bark); in the treatment of gout, dropsy and rheumatism, and is recommended as a reliable solvent of kidney stones (leaves)

Blepharis persica

Impotency and rheumatism (plant); headache (leaf paste); in wounds, ulcers, nasal haemorrhage, asthma, throat inflammation, ascites, and disorders of liver and spleen, and as a purgative (leaves).

Blumea balsamifera

Diarrhea, cholera and body swellings due to beri-beri and rheumatism (leaf); angina, chest troubles, headache, dropsy and hypertension and as a tranquilizer (leaf extract).

Boerhavia diffusa

To treat anaemia, oedema, internal abscess, calculi, eye diseases, oedema during pregnancy, haemoptysis, for inducing sleep, fever, rheumatic ailments, difficult labour, vaginal pain, rejuvinative, asthma, oedema, anaemia, jaundice, ascites, anasarca, scanty urine and internal inflammation. It is also an antidote to snake poisoning.

Brassica juncea

Folk remedy for arthritis, foot ache, lumbago, and rheumatism. Tumours, abscesses, colds, lumbago, rheumatism, and stomach disorders (seed); skin eruptions and ulcers (mustard oil); for headache (leaves).

Brassica napus

In the treatment of chronic coughs and bronchial catarrh (root juice); with camphor for rheumatism and stiff joints; dissolves gall stones (seed oil). It is dropped into the ear to relieve earaches.

Brassica oleracea

Hemorrhoids, as a poultice to cleanse infected wounds and skin diseases, to lower blood sugar,in the treatment of asthma, gout and rheumatism (leaf); increases secretion of gastric juices (leaf and seed).

Buxus wallichiana

Useful in the treatment of rheumatism and syphilis.

Caesalpinia sappan

Dysentery and diarrhea, and its paste in rheumatism, haemorrhages and to treat wounds (wood decoction)

Callicarpa macrophylla

In rheumatic pains (leaves); oral ulcers (seeds paste); in leprosy (seed); in gonorrhoea (bark); to treat indigestion (root juice); to treat boils on the tongue (fruits)

Calluna vulgaris

For treating rheumatism and arthritis, whilst a hot poultice is a traditional remedy for chilblains, for rheumatism, arthritis and gout (plant); in the treatment of coughs, colds, bladder and kidney disorders, cystitis etc (flowering shoot)

Calophyllum inophyllum

Leprosy and rheumatism (seed oil); in scabies (seed kernel); to treat eye disease, scabies, cutaneous diseases, gonorrhoea and gleet, rheumatism and gout. Used as an inhalation in migraine and vertigo.

Calotropis procera

Dysentery, diarrhea, indigestion, reducing fever, leprosy, skin diseases and eczema (root bark); cough, cold and asthma (flower and root bark); toothache (latex); rheumatism and syphilis; to relieve stomach pain (leaves); cures piles, asthma, cholera and wounds (flowers).

Caltha palustris

To remove warts and is also used in the treatment of fits and anaemia (plant); used in the treatment of high blood cholesterol and rheumatism (root).

Campsis grandiflora

In the treatment of women's complaints (flowers and whole plant); to correct menstrual disorders, rheumatoid pains, traumatic injuries, difficult urination, pruritis and oozing dermaphytoses (flower)

Capparis decidua

Useful in cough, asthma and inflammations (root bark); as a poultice on boils and swellings, to relieve toothache (tender leaves); in remittent fevers and rheumatism (stem bark); to animals for stomach disturbances (decoction of ariel parts).

Capparis spinosa

Spleen, kidney and liver maladies (root); gastrointestinal infections, diarrhoea, gout, rheumatism, skin conditions, capillary weakness and easy bruising; coughs, and externally to treat eye infections and in preventing the formation of cataracts (unopened flower buds); to treat vaginal thrush (plant decoction).

Capsicum annuum

For atony of the intestines and stomach, indigestion, dipsomania, catarrh, relieving chronic congestion, relaxed uvula (tincture powder), as a powerful external rubefacient (without blistering), in lumbago, rheumatism and neuralgia. It is taken internally in the treatment of the cold stage of fevers, debility in convalescence or old age, varicose veins, asthma and digestive problems. Externally it is used in the treatment of sprains, unbroken chilblains, neuralgia, pleurisy etc. It is an effective sea-sickness preventative. It is useful for Bursitis, Diabetic neuropathy, Osteoarthritis, Psoriasis, Rheumatoid arthritis, Shingles (herpes zoster) and postherpetic neuralgia. Cayenne pepper exerts a number of beneficial effects on the cardiovascular system.

Cardiospermum halicacabum

Pain and rheumatism (plant paste); earache, rheumatism, as a poultice on swellings (leaf), lowers blood pressure, to treat stomach diseases, rat-poisoning, snake-poisoning, cough with fever, scrotal enlargement, alopecia, anaemia and jaundice.

Carissa opaca

Laxative, rheumatism and animal sores that are infested with worms (root).

Carthamus tinctorius

Sores and pain related to rheumatism (seed oil); jaundice (flower); laxative (seed); boils, candida infections, dysmenorrhea, rashes, fever, gout, gynecopathy, lack of apetite, measles, tumors, as an antidote, an emmenagogue, in cases of hysteria, such as that associated with chlorosis; poultice used to ally inflammation of the womb after child birth (powdered seed).

Carum carvi

Stomach problems, bronchitis, to increase the production of breast milk in nursing mothers (seed); rheumatism and lumbago (seed vapor); in cancer, cholera, abscesses, flatulence, halitosis, headache and as an emmenagogue; "Caraway water" is used as a veh.

Casearia sylvestris

For diarrhea, chest colds and flu (bark); to treat wounds and leprosy (roots or seeds);for skin diseases, to treat rheumatism, syphilis, herpes, stomach and skin ulcers, edema, fevers of all kinds, diarrhea, a topical pain-reliever and as an anti-ulcer drug (plant)

Cassia auriculata

Diabetes (seed); skin diseases (root); to treat sore throat, enemas, rheumatism and eye diseases (bark); to treat chronic purulent opthalmia and conjunctivitis, gout, gonorrhoea, dysentery, diabetes cough and asthma; to treat urinary disorders and diabetes (flowers).

Cassia fistula

In tuberculosis, reducing fever and as a tonic (seed and fruit), in rheumatism, gout, blood poisoning, dysentery, anthrax, diabetes, leprosy, liver problems (including biliousness) and for varicose veins (including shrinking them) (pod pulp).

Cassia tora

Snakebite anitdote (root); skin diseases such as caused by ringworm and itching, rheumatic ailments (seed and leaf); eases skin itch and eruptions, relieves pain, congestion, redness, or sensitivity to light of the eyes (herb). Used as a poultice, warmed leaves reduce gout, sciatica, and joint pains, in cases of liver yang rising, chronic or acute constipation accompanying liver yin deficiency.

Castanea sativa

As an astringent and in whooping cough (leaf and bark); for fevers and diseases of the respiratory track, rheumatism, to ease lower back pains and to relieve stiff muscles and joints (leaves)

Cedrus deodara

In arthritis, rheumatism, skin diseases, ulcers, to remove the pain,it resolves inflammation, paralysis, stone in the kidney, fevers. in remittent and intermittent fevers, diarrhea and dysentery (bark); in the treatment of ulcers (powder); bilious fevers and inveterate diarrhea arising from atony of the muscular fiber.

Celastrus paniculatus

In rheumatism, treats scabies, pains and wounds, intestinal ulcers, tuberculosis, epilepsy, stomach disorders, psychosis, oedema, disorder of nervous system, leprosy (seed oil); in gout, external wounds, beriberi and as a sedative in anxiety and other nervous problems, intestinal diseases, wound, drowsiness in fever and amenorrhoea, sharpens the memory, cures sores, ulcers, rheumatism and gout; to treat pneumonia (crushed root).

Celastrus scandens

For chronic liver and skin ailments (including skin cancer), rheumatism, leucorrhoea, dysentery and suppressed menses; to treat obstinate sores, skin eruptions etc (root); as an ointment on burns, scrapes and skin eruptions (bark)

Chenopodium album

Anemia (root and leaf); stomach worms (plant oil); for treating burns (leaf juice); as a wash or poultice to bug bites, sunstroke, rheumatic joints and swollen feet, whilst a decoction is used for carious teeth (leaves); urinary problems and are considered useful for relieving the discharge of semen through the urine (seeds)

Chimaphila maculata

In the treatment of rheumatism and colds, on ulcers, scrofula and cancers (plant); to treat pain (root)

Chimaphila umbellata

In the treatment of various problems related to the urinary system, it is also prescribed for more serious conditions such as kidney stones and gonorrhoea (plant); in cardiac and kidney diseases, chronic rheumatism and scrofula (fresh leaves)

Chlorogalum pomeridianum

To treat wind in the stomach, rubbed on rheumatic joints, in the treatment of dandruff, to prevent lice and also to treat skin irritations including that caused by poison oak (bulb)

Cibotium barometz

In the treatment of rheumatism, lumbago, sciatica, leucorrhoea, dysuria, polyuria in the aged, on wounds to stop bleeding etc (rhizome)

Cichorium intybus

Equisetum arvense

Lower back problems (related to the musculoskeleton) and rheumatism. Horsetail is found beneficial in dropsy, gravel and kidney affections. The ashes of the plant are considered very valuable in acidity of the stomach, dyspepsia, etc. Besides being useful in kidney and bladder trouble, a strong decoction acts as an emmenagogue; being cooling and astringent, it is of efficacy for haemorrhage, cystic ulceration and ulcers in the urinary passages. The decoction applied externally will stop the bleeding of wounds and quickly heal them, and will also reduce the swelling of eyelids. Horsetails have an unusual chemistry compared to most other plants.

Eucalyptus globulus

In rheumatism, asthma, spasmodic throat troubles, increases cardiac action, chronic bronchitis, skin diseases and for burns (essential oil of leaf and aerial part); in sporadic fevers (alcohol extract of bark and leaf); alleviating spasms (leaf); for relieving coughs and colds, sore throats and other infections (leaves essential oil); in the treatment of diarrhoea and bladder inflammation, externally it is applied to cuts etc (resin); in the form of a tincture in asthma and chronic bronchitis (dried leaves).

Flacourtia indica

In cholera (gum); enlargement of the spleen and in jaundice and against roundworms (fruit). Used to treat biliousness, rheumatism, gout, skin diseases, urinary disorders and mental disorders (bark).

Foeniculum vulgare

Spleen, kidney and chest diseases, gastrointestinal problems, eye and eyelid inflammations and medicine for cattle (fruit); colic (of infants) and kills hookworm (oil); as an emmenagogue, edema, rheumatism and asthma (essential seed oil).

Garcinia cambogia

Problems of the bowel and in rheumatism (fruit rind decoction); able to decrease the acidity and to increase the mucosal defence in the gastric areas, thereby justifying its use as an antiulcerogenic agent, as a heart tonic and lowers the production of triglycerides and cholesterol. Hyoscyamus niger

Rheumatism (plant); diabetes and as an analgesic specifically used for pain affecting the urinary tract, especially when due to kidney stones(leaf); dilating the pupil of the eye (plant juice); alleviating spasms (including in the urinary tract), in treating Parkinson's disease, anxiety disorders, asthma, whooping cough, motion sickness, Meniere's syndrome and for inducing sleep. Externally, it is used as an oil to relieve painful conditions such as neuralgia, dental and rheumatic pains. Hyoscyamus has anodyne, narcotic, sedative and mydriatic properties.

Hypericum perforatum

As an antidepressant, in mania, apathy, hypersomnia, and insomnia, anorexia, psychomotor retardation, depression feelings of worthlessness, anxiety disorders and aids in healing wounds and ulcers (for nervous disorders. the drug may take as long as a month before any effects are noticed). It is also used for menopausal changes triggering irritability and anxiety. In addition to neuralgic pain, it will ease fibrositis, sciatica and rheumatic pain.

Externally it is a healing and anti-inflammatory remedy. As a lotion it will speed the healing of wounds and bruises, varicose veins and mild burns. The oil is especially useful for the healing of sunburn. It has the calming properties, useful in treating bedwetting, insomnia, and other nervous conditions, as well as some form of melancholy. An oil extract of the herb can be taken for stomach ache, colic, intestinal problems, and as an expectorant for the congestion in the lungs. A tea made from the flowers is good for anemia, headache, insomnia, jaundice, chest congestion, and catarrh. A tea made from the herb has been used for uterine cramping and menstrual difficulties. The oil extract also make a good external application for burns, wounds, sores, bruises, and other skin problems.

Iberis amara

Leaves are used as an external application for rheumatism, dropsy and colic. The stem juice is applied to bites and stings of fishes. The dried juice of the root is used as a purgative. A decoction of the roots and leaves is used in rheumatism, gout gonorrhoea and dropsy. Juice is given as diuretic in dropsy.

Jatropha multifida

Ulcers and wounds (latex); as a laxative and for scabies (leaf); for indigestion and colic (decoction of dried root); for treating ascites, gout, paralysis and skin diseases (seeds); rheumatic conditions, itch and parasitic skin diseases, and in the treatment of fever, jaundice and gonorrhoea (seed oil)

Juniperus communis

In urinary tract diseases, dropsy, digestive maladies, maladies associated with the chills, rheumatism and body aches. Oil of Juniper is given as a diuretic, stomachic, and carminative in indigestion, flatulence, and diseases of the kidney and bladder. The oil mixed with lard is also used in veterinary practice as an application to exposed wounds and prevents irritation from flies. Spirit of Juniper is employed as a stimulating diuretic in cardiac and hepatic dropsy. The fruit is readily eaten by most animals, especially sheep, and to prevent and cure dropsy.

Kaempferia galanga

As a carminative, diuretic and expectorant; in treating nausea, flatulence, dyspepsia, halitosis, rheumatism, catarrh and enteritis (tuber). Powdered tubers are administered for coughs and pectoral affections.

Kydia calycina

In rheumatism, lumbago, body aches and skin diseases and lowers blood pressure (leaf). Leaves are chewed when there is a deficiency of saliva; to treat boils, diabetes and rheumatism (bark).

Lactuca sativa

For painful ulcers and burns (plant). Excellent remedy for acid indigestion and "heartburn." Insomnia, anxiety, neuroses, hyperactivity in children, dry coughs, whooping cough, rheumatic pain etc.

Laurus nobilis

In the treatment of hysteria, amenorrhoea, flatulent colic etc (fruits, leaves); to treat upper respiratory tract disorders and to ease arthritic aches and pains (leaves); to treat sprains, bruises etc (oil from fruit); used to treat anorexia, cancer, candida, colic, dandruff, earache, high Blood Pressure, hysteria, nervousness, rheumatism, uterosis.

Lavandula angustifolia

For mental problems associated with menopause, disorders associated with muscle tone of the autonomic nervous system, anxiety, digestive disorders, rheumatism and sciatica.

Lawsonia inermis

As an emmenagogue, in aching joints, bee stings, boils, burns, candida, condyloma, dermatosis, fever, headache, herpes, hoarseness, hysteria, jaundice, leucorrhea, myalgia, ophthalmia, parturition, spermatorrhea rheumatism, skin irritation, sores, stomach. The leaves and seeds are used in the form of juice, decoction and powder to treat consumption, diabetes and intrinsic haemorrhage. Paste of the leaves are applied externally in case of skin diseases, fungal infections, cracks on feet. It is employed both internally and locally in jaundice, leprosy, smallpox, and affections of the skin. The fruit has emmenagogue properties. The bark is useful in treating jaundice and enlargement of spleen, calculous affection, as alterative and in skin diseases and leprosy. The leaves are useful in menorrhagia, leucorrhoea and are also applied externally in headache. A decoction of leaves are used as an astringent. The leaf juice mixed with water and sugar is given in spermatorrhoea. The leaves are prophylactic against skin diseases. It is also used for typhoid and haemorrhagic conditions.

Leucas aspera

Solanum trilobatum

Bronchitis (plant); cough (flower and fruit); indigestion, spermatorrhoea and fatigue (leaves); in rheumatism and constipation (Dried and powdered fruit); If used as ear drops the leaf juices cures otorrhoea.

Solanum xanthocarpum

Cough, asthma, bronchitits, dropsy, leprosy, constipation, flatulence, sore throat, tonsilitis, gum diseases, snake bites, heart disease, chest pain, certain types of fever, muscular pains, gonorrhoea, dysuria, enlargement of the liver and spleen and stomach. Leaves are applied locally to relieve pain. The juice of berries is used in sore throat. Like roots, seeds are also administered as an expectorant in asthma and cough. The plant is credited with diuretic properties and is used to cure dropsy. Its juice is mixed with whey and ginger and given in fevers. The juice of the leaves, mixed with black pepper, is prescribed in rheumatism.

Solidago virgaurea

In kidney stones and dysentery, asthma, whooping cough, internal lesions, dropsy, and chronic eczema, and in rheumatism, acute and chronic nephritis and oedema of a renal nature with history of dystrophy, in the treatment of urinary infections, chronic catarrh, skin diseases and influenza (plant); in diarrhoea and dysentery (root)

Soymida febrifuga

For gargles, vaginal infections, and enemata; it is also sometimes given for the treatment of rheumatic swellings (bark decoction); applied as a poultice for muscular and joint pain (bark powder); in sporadic fever, dysentery and debility (bark).

Spilanthes acmella

For malaria, toothache (flower); promotes salivation (seed); to treat dysentery (plant); used as a bath for relieving rheumatism and as a lotion for scabies and psoriasis (decoction).

Spilanthes oleracea

As a plaster in swolen areas and broken bones, to relieve constipation, useful in rheumatism, inflammations of the digestive, renal, respiratory and reproductive tracts, asthma, congestion, and bronchitis, obesity, high cholesterol, in severe inflammations of skin, such as erysipelas, scalds and burns, crural ulcers, haemorrhoids, eczema, to soothe severe itchiness and inflammations of eyes (plant); as a poultice or ointment for skin irritation and inflammation as well as for skin ulcers. Boils, carbuncles, and abscesses

Strophanthus sarmentosus

Used to treat anxiety, atherosclerosis, arthrosis, constipation, diarrhea, fracture, high Blood Pressure, leprosy, rheumatism, scabies, poisonous bites and sores.

Strychnos minor

In mania (fruit); rheumatism, diarrhea & colic and as a laxative (root); in suppurating tumors (leaf).

Styrax benzoin

Used in the treatment of asthma, bronchosis, cancer, catarrh, colic, constipation, corn, cough, cramp, dermatosis, enterosis, gout, immunodepression, laryngosis, nervousness, rheumatism, stomachache, stroke and ulcer.

Tabernaemontana divaricata

Tagetes erecta

Diseases of the eye and hemorrhoids (flower); rheumatism, bronchitis and colds (plant); as a laxative (root). It is used internally in the treatment of indigestion, colic, severe constipation, coughs and dysentery. Externally, it is used to treat sores, ulcers, eczema, sore eyes and rheumatism. A decoction of the flowers is used to treat colds, conjunctivitis, mumps, sore eyes etc.

Tamarindus indica

As an astringent in bowel complaints, to weaken the action of resinous cathartics (pulp); in correcting bilious disorders, for rheumatism (plant); used in subacid infusions, and a decoction is said to destroy worms in children, and is also useful for jaundice, and externally as a wash for sore eyes and ulcers (leaves)In some forms of sore throat the fruit has been found of service; for asthma (bark).

Externally, the leaves have been used in a steam bath as a treatment for rheumatism. A homeopathic remedy is made from the young shoots and the berries. It is used in the treatment of cystitis, eruptions, headaches, heart and kidney problems, rheumatism etc.

In tuberculosis, bronchitis, in rheumatism, nervous affections, haemoptysis and catarrh (plant); astringent, stomachic, febrifugal and aphrodisiac (fruit); as a tonic and antipyretic (fruit and plant).

Thalictrum foliolosum

In ophthalmia, diarrhea, hemorrhoids, skin discoloration, reducing fever, in piles, leucoderma, eczema, boils, toothache, atonic indigestion, as a tonic and laxative (root); pains in the abdomen (root decoction); rheumatism and gout (plant)

Thymus vulgaris

The plant is used internally in the treatment of dry coughs, whooping cough, bronchitis, bronchial catarrh, cold, asthma, laryngitis, indigestion, gastritis and diarrhoea and enuresis in children. Externally, it is used in the treatment of tonsillitis, gum diseases, rheumatism, arthritis and fungal infections (Athlete's foot).The whole herb is used in the treatment of digestive disorders, sore throats, fevers etc.

Toona sureni

Used as a tonic to lower fever and to assuage rheumatic pains (bark); applied to swellings (leaf tips).

Trachyspermum ammi

For sore throat, bronchitis, diarrhea, increasing the secretion of gastric juices, alleviating spasms and as a tonic (fruit); as a carminative (root and fruit); in flatulence, atonic dyspepsia and diarrhoea and cholera (plant); colds, coughs, influenza, asthma, diarrhoea, cholera, colic, indigestion, wind, oedema, arthritis and rheumatism.

Trachyspermum roxburghianum

In flatulence, dyspepsia, diarrhoea, pharyngitis, rheumatoid arthritis, bronchitis, cough, asthma and strangury (fruit).

Uraria lagopodioides

Intermittent fever and inflammation of the chest; in rheumatism, fever, catarrh and and bleeding piles (roots); in diarrhoea (leaves); an antidote to snake (Echis carinata) bite (plant).

Urginea indica

In rheumatism, asthma, preparing “chandni bhasma” (which is used in paralysis), as a deobustruent, prescribed for dropsy, rheumatism, skin diseases, bronchitis, asthma, renal calculi, leprosy, scabies, headaches and diseases of the nose (bulb).

Vernonia cinerea

Useful for the purifying the blood, bile and semen, used as a specific for leucorrhoea, menorrhagia, and in the treatment of chronic skin diseases, dysuria, strangury, bladder stones, piles, worms and haematological disorders (plant); for the treatment of amoebiosis, humid herpes, eczema and ringworm and for the extraction of guinea worms, elephantiasis (leaf juice); to treat fevers, rheumatism and conjunctivitis (flowers); effective against roundworms and threadworms, leucoderma, psoriasis and other chronic skin diseases (seeds).

Vetiveria zizanioides

In stomach ulcers, increasing the secretion of gastric juices, as an astringent and in quenching thirst (root); in colic, vomiting and as a linimint (for lumbago, rheumatism and sprains) (root oil)to treat fainting, indigestion, thirst, diarrhoea, diseases of heart, cough, hiccough, respiratory diseases, difficult micturition, fever with burning sensation morbid thirst, and skin diseases.

Viola tricolor

In disorders of blood, rheumatism, eczema and other skin complaints (herb); asthma, epilepsy, cystitis and diseases of infants.

Vitex negundo

As a demulcent (in the sinuses) and on sores (related to scrofula) (oil); in gonorrhea, rheumatism, sprains, fever (related to catarrh) and headache (leaf); aids in the removal of worms and foetid discharges from ulcers (leaf juice), controls acne in teenagers, regulates ovulatory cycle, menopause, menorrhagia (heavy menstruation), menstrual difficulties (secondary amenorrhea), premenstrual syndrome, amenorrhea, dysmenorrhea and endometriosis and fibrocystic breast disease among women, relieves pains due to rheumatism, gout, sciatica and the body ache resulted from heavy physical exertion, skin troubles, migraine; with the right proportion it is use for dental care for healthy, disease free teeth, as mouth wash and treatment for toothache. Pillows stuffed with leaves are slept on to remove catarrh and headache. Dried fruit is used to destroy human worm while seeds boiled in water and eaten, or the water is taken internally, to prevent spread of toxins from poisonous bites of animals, also cooling for skin disorders.

Withania somnifera

Rheumatism (root and plant); to coagulate milk (seed); as a uterine sedative, in dropsy, ulcers, scabies, asthma, cough and as a tonic (root); cancer and AIDS; “rasayana agent” in “Ayurveda” medicine (enhances sexual performance),to treat nervous exhaustion, debility, insomnia, wasting diseases, failure to thrive in children, impotence, infertility, multiple sclerosis, applied as a poultice to boils, swellings and other painful parts.
